Attorney Jean P. Sumers has been practicing law for over 25 years, focusing primarily on civil law, family law, elder law, probate, and estate planning. She is a trained mediator and is also trained in collaborative law, allowing her to offer alternative dispute resolution options to her clients.
Jean grew up in Danevang, Texas, known as the Danish capital of Texas, located near El Campo. Her great-grandparents immigrated to the United States from Denmark and were among the original settlers of Danevang in 1894.
Jean earned her Juris Doctor from the University of Houston Law Center in 1998, where she was awarded the Maurice Howard Treiman Award for Writing Excellence. Her legal studies focused on health law, but over the years, she has gained extensive experience in various civil law areas.
Before attending law school, Jean worked in mental health services. She holds a Master’s degree in Psychology and previously worked for the mental health authority in the youth services program. This experience has been invaluable in handling family law cases, particularly those involving complex emotional and psychological aspects.
Jean now practices primarily from the firm’s Hempstead office and continues to serve clients in family law, probate, and estate planning matters.

Jean has actively contributed to legal ethics and professionalism, serving on committees for the State Bar of Texas focused on professionalism and unauthorized legal practice. Her commitment to upholding the integrity of the legal profession has been a hallmark of her career.
She has also been recognized for her volunteer work with the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, where she met her husband. The couple continues to serve together on the International Committee, welcoming international guests to the rodeo.
